The awards of John Wayne

s the epitome of masculinity and strength, John Wayne will be forever remembered as the iconic American actor who starred in countless Western classics. His popularity is still huge, as demonstrated by the variety of John Wayne collectables that sell each year.

Wayne’s acting talent was officially recognised by number of prestigious industry awards. Let’s take a look at some of them:

Oscars
Throughout his career, Wayne was nominated for an Oscar a total of 3 times; in 1950, 1961 and 1970. This is an impressive count in the most prestigious of acting awards, where nominations count for almost as much as the award itself. He won the award in 1970 for his leading role in the film True Grit after losing out on the other two nominations.

Golden Apple
This American award commends the on-set behaviour of the actor or actress, rather than a performance, recognising that they are particularly pleasant and respectful to work with. Wayne won a total of 2 Golden Apples, in 1965 for Most Cooperative Actor and again in 1976 for Male Star of the Year.

Golden Boot
This award recognises the contribution that actors, actresses and crew members have made to the genre of Western films, so it is hardly surprising to learn Wayne won 2 Golden Boot awards. These were awarded posthumously and collected in the ceremony by his son Patrick Wayne.

Golden Globes
Another prestigious accolade is the Golden Globe awards, which honours outstanding achievements in the entertainment industry. Wayne won his first in 1953 for the World Film Favourite, his second in 1966 was the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement, whilst the third was for Best Motion Picture Actor for his role in True Grit, awarded in 1970.
