The Egyptian Museum: a must for visitors

When visiting Egypt there is nothing better than immersing yourself in the culture and history of the Ancient Egyptians. The country is awash with ancient sites and places of interest. If you want to view many of the artifacts remaining from that time, a visit to the Egyptian Museum is a must for your holiday to Egypt.

Home to the biggest collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts anywhere in the world, the Egyptian museum, or to give its full title The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, holds much of the wonders of this ancient time. Located in the capital of the country, Cairo, it is the ideal place to continue your passage of knowledge of the ancient Egyptian’s. The museum itself owes its existence to the Egyptian Antiquities service which was originally created to stop the looting of the country’s oldest treasures. The stories contained in the museum are spread across seven thousand years; it is no wonder why it is considered to be a treasure of the country.

Home to over 120,000 individual items it would be impossible for you to see every single item in one visit so you will need to be selective in what you see. Something you should not miss, however, is the collection on the upper floor for the famous Pharaoh Tutankhamen. Artifacts on display in this collection include the gold funerary mask and sarcophagus, four huge gilded boxes fitting inside each other, an ancient trumpet and ancient thrones. As Tutankhamen is the most famous of Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs it is a real must for tourists on Egypt holidays to make the most of the wondrous treasures located in this collection. If you’re interested in mummification then the royal mummy room may be of considerable interest to you. It is home to 11 royal mummies from pharaonic times. There is an entrance fee charged for access to this room and photos are forbidden but it is still well worth a visit.

In visiting the Egyptian museum you will be able to understand the diversity and heritage of Egypt in a way which will help you connect with the ancient history of the country right up to present day. Tourists who have a genuine interest in the culture of the country should not miss this site.
