Superheroes Climb Kilimanjaro Raising Funds for Sudan’s Vital Health Radio Service

Staffordshire, United Kingdom (5th July, 2012) – Private Kilimanjaro, a leading, expert provider of private and group climbs up Mount Kilimanjaro, has overseen a group of young Catholics who have successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Project 2030 to raise funds for a new radio antenna mast in Southern Sudan.

Last year the group visited a local radio station in Southern Sudan where some of the group had been volunteering. The radio station was a critical part of public health information and education in Sudan where there is an 80% illiteracy rate, as well as providing local jobs and internships. Whilst the group were there, a freak storm completely wiped out the mast. The cost to replace it was £10,000, which was unaffordable to the local Sudanese. The group then set themselves the challenge of raising the money themselves to replace the mast.

The group had entered into Private Kilimanjaro’s Annual Charity Climb competition where the best idea for a fundraising Kilimanjaro climb stunt wins a free climb. Jen Whelan, Chaplain of Project 2030 came up with the idea of climbing dressed as superheroes and went on to be one of the three winners in 2011. The team completed their climb this month.

Jen commented: “We had huge fun with this challenge and caused quite a stir on the mountain as other climbers had a good chuckle at Batman, Fearless Fred, a ninja, Robin, and one of the Thunderbirds tackling the mighty Kilimanjaro.”

Jane Deakin of Private Kilimanjaro commented: “Climbing Kilimanjaro is the most fantastic charity challenge and each year sees fundraisers come up with crazy new ways to make climbing Africa’s highest summit even more fun. To encourage more of these wonderful fundraisers like the Superheroes we give away free climbs in our annual charity challenge competition. Look out for our next charity challenge competition starting in October 2012.”
