What Is A PAC Code?

A PAC code or Port Authorisation Code is a special number that allows you to change mobile phone service provider and take your existing mobile phone number with you. Not all mobile phone providers use the PAC code system, but most do, in particular in Europe. In the UK, providing any customer who asks for one with a PAC code is obligatory. The near universal use of the PAC code protocol is part of the reason it is so easy for you to take your mobile number with you when you change mobile phone service providers.

How to Obtain a PAC Code

You can only get your PAC code from your current mobile phone provider. Usually to get it all you need to do is to ring them and supply them with your security details or some information from your latest bill. They are obliged to give you your PAC code within 2 working days or give you a written reason for not doing so.

Normally a PAC code is only valid for 30 calendar days. If you do not transfer your number to another mobile phone provider within that time frame the PAC code expires and you cannot transfer your mobile phone number using that particular PAC code. There is an additional 2 days allowed for the new provider to complete the transfer process. To be 100% sure the transfer of your mobile number to a new service provider goes smoothly it is wise to choose and sign up with a new provider within 25 days of receiving your PUK code.

What to Do If You Are Refused A PAC Code

When you ask for a PAC code your current mobile phone provider knows that you are planning to leave them, so will try to persuade you to stay with them. This can be a good thing if they offer you a better deal or offer to match the other service provider’s deal. However, occasionally they will mess you around and not give out a PAC code. If this happens you need to report them to Ofcom.

If you need a PAC code visit the PAC Code site to get instructions on how to do that are tailored for each mobile service provider that operates in the UK.
