Stoke on Trent, United Kingdom (2nd August, 2012) – Autonet Insurance, the multi-award winning van insurance broker, are supporting the campaign to save the Staffords’ name and traditions.
A daily regional Staffordshire newspaper, The Sentinel, has launched a campaign to prevent the disbandment of 3rd Battalion of The Mercian Regiment (Staffords); following an announcement from the Ministry of Defence which stated that the regiment is due to be scrapped as part of cutbacks.
The unit will be disbanded by October 2014, along with 16 others, as part of plans to cut the Army by 20,000 by 2018.
So far, more than 10,000 people have signed petitions organised by The Sentinel and the Staffordshire Regimental Association to support the campaign to save Staffords. Several companies, including insurance firm Autonet, have also pledged their support for the campaign.
Autonet has distributed copies of the petition amongst its 520-strong workforce. They have currently received over a hundred signatures and are hoping to more than quadruple this number before the campaign’s end.
Ian Donaldson, Managing Director of Autonet Insurance, commented: “Staffordshire has lost a lot over the years like the steel industry and mining, so we need to preserve things like the name of the Staffords, which is key to the area’s heritage.
“Some employees at Autonet even have relatives currently serving in the Army, and we have three present members of staff who are ex-military. They are disgusted by this.
“We need to stand up for ourselves and the Staffords’ centuries of history.”
