botonics Speak Out Against Cosmetic Surgery for Children

London, United Kingdom (04 May, 2011) – botonics, London-based cosmetic surgery specialists who employ some of the most experienced medical professionals in the field, comment on the recent story of an American child who underwent cosmetic surgery.

Earlier this month, news emerged that a 7-year-old girl named Samantha Shaw, of South Dakota, had undergone a plastic surgery procedure to pin back her ears, known as anotoplasty . It was revealed that the young girl’s mother had insisted her daughter undergo the procedure in order to avoid schoolyard bullying because of her appearance; a decision which has caused much controversy across the US and UK.

Commenting on the story, Bill Green, Managing Director of cosmetic surgery clinic botonics, said: “It is our belief that children this young are not necessarily mentally mature enough to have a surgical cosmetic procedure.

“Granted, the case of Samantha Shaw demonstrates the positive intentions of a mother hoping to prevent her daughter from being bullied, but it is our strong belief that minor corrective cosmetic procedures like otoplasties are something which should be reserved for older teens and adults.

“Bodies do not stop growing until the late teens, so a procedure done too young can require corrective surgery later in life. Just because something can be changed, doesn’t mean it should be.

“We invite anyone with queries about the relation of age to our procedures to contact us to arrange a consultation for more information.”
