Fosters Solicitors Highlight Risks at Work Following Recent Scaffolding Collapse

Cheshire, United Kingdom, (29th November 2011) – Fosters Solicitors, a leading no win no fee personal injury solicitor, have recently been instructed to pursue a claim for a worker injured when scaffolding collapsed at his workplace.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recently reported that the director of a scaffolding company from Nottinghamshire has been fined after a roofing contractor was injured during a scaffold collapse. In that case the 48-year-old fell six metres and fractured his pelvis in four places after scaffolding built on behalf of David Knowles collapsed at a house in Nottingham. The claimant was unable to return to work for four months following the incident.

A HSE investigation found that the scaffolding had not been built by a competent scaffolder, was not erected to standard configuration and had not been tied correctly. Mr Knowles was prosecuted for failing to ensure that people not in his employment were not exposed to risks to their health and safety and pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 in court. He was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £3,944 costs.

Fosters Solicitors commented: “This and other cases demonstrate the terrible impact that avoidable accidents at work can have. Falls from height are one of the biggest causes of workplace injury in the construction industry, often leading to serious injury and, in some cases, death. The regulations currently in place exist to reduce the risk of injuries occurring, and construction firms cannot ignore their responsibilities.”
