What is the acai berry? Referred to as “the wonder berry” or “nature’s perfect food”, the acai berry (pronounced ass-eye-ee) is something you may never have heard of before. However, the berry is packed full of nutrition, so you might want to listen up.
What is so great about this berry?
Said to be one of the most nutritious fruits on the planet, the acai berry is made up of all the essential fatty acids needed by the body – Omega 3, 6 and 9. Also contained in the little berry are various vitamins, minerals, phytosterols and amino acids.
Not only does the acai berry contain all of the above, it also may help to protect the body from the damaging effects of free radicals and oxidative stress. Free radicals may be linked with premature aging and a range of other damaging diseases, but the anthocyanins contained within the berry are said to work against this.
Where is this berry from?
Acai can be harvested sustainably, cultivated as a high income low impact crop. Native to the rainforests of Brazil it needs shade to grow at its best requiring a variety of trees growing around it. This is fantastic news for the rainforest as it avoids the same crop being continually farmed, destroying the biodiversity of the rainforest. The way the acai berry is harvested is also great for maintaining the rainforest as only the branch needs to be cut, rather than the whole tree; each branch can contain up to 900 berries.
Despite the berry originating from the rainforests of Brazil, it is available to buy in the UK in a range of products from smoothies, supplements, or even in frozen packs for the freezer.
